Quick Reflection of the doctoral journey

The doctoral journey is many things, one being an opportunity to learn more of yourself, and your resiliency. I cannot say that my journey has been an easy one, because it has not been. I've wanted to give up more times than I care to admit out of frustration, feeling overwhelmed, and imposter syndrome. But it's also those positive feelings and moments you have when your dissertation Chair provides positive feedback about your work and being notified that your chapters are approved. It is the complex relationship you have when working to become a doctor or expert in any field, you have highs and you have lows. But as you begin to see the finish line, you push to complete the journey and have the feeling of accomplishment. Everyone's journey or path is different as they work to achieve a level of academic or professional success. Regardless of what that may look like, give yourself grace.

After I completed data analysis, I received some great advice when dealing with the different interactions, expectations, and more of academia. I wanted to share some of them with you all (without giving away all of my findings until I defend and publish).

Find individuals who support you and can provide you a safe place for those challenging days but the good ones as well in the different aspects of your life (i.e., personal, academic, and professional). They can provide a different perspective and suggestions/advice on how to be the best version of yourself overall and in different aspects of your life.

Utilize external resources to find other ways to connect with individuals in your field or just to meet new people. You may find someone who could potentially provide mentorship to you if you aren't having any luck finding one within your institution.

Do activities that make you feel good and bring you peace to help reduce your stress with everything that goes in our lives and academic careers. We want to be able to disconnect at times, and doing so will look different for everyone.

Remember who you are. At the end of the day, you are in this position for a reason, and your work, your research, the impact you are making, all matters. When you have those feelings of doubt, frustration, sadness, remember who you are and how you got to the point you're at. You wouldn't be where you were if you didn't put in the time, work, and dedication to work towards and achieve a goal you've set for yourself.

These were constant reminders as I keep getting closer to the finish line, especially remembering who I am. So, remember who you are and be a boss no matter.
